"Above All things" by Tanis Rideout
Is the first great novel I have read this year. This work of historical fiction looks at the life of George Mallory who attempted (and may have succeeded in climbing Mount Everest 8 years before Sir Edmund Hillary. The novel looks at not only the climb but the love relationship of George and his wife Ruth and the struggle these attempts brought to their marriage. A novel of great passion and feelings. Within a few pages one could be immersed in the warmth of love or in cold, freezing pain upon the slopes of Everest.
This is a McLelland Stewart book and available on Amazon to those not in Canada. There are some signed copies at Back Beat Books in Perth. We had the pleasure of having Tanis read her twice in 2012. She is also involved in conservation of lake Ontario and official poet for the lake involved with Sarah Harmer and Gord Downie. I look forward to her next work.
